Family Day! Algorithms + Assemblage

Bring the whole family to Algorithms + Assemblage, a free Family Day exploring the creative connections between art, language, technology, and hands-on making.
Inspired by contemporary digital artists Nathaniel Stern +Sasha Stiles and their exhibition Generation to Generation: Conversing with Kindred Technologies, families will experiment with the ways artists use ideas, instructions, words, code, and everyday materials to create works of art.
Family Day Activities:
- Write a simple algorithm—a set of steps for completing a task or solving a problem
- Create an assemblage sculpture using discarded materials to add to a temporary museum display or take home
- Write poetry and experiment with wordplay inspired by works on view
- Shape and sculpt a miniature artwork with air-dry clay using language prompts
- Create a miniature plate or bowl inspired by the work of Pablo Picasso
Meet a Robot:
Explore artificial intelligence, creativity, and learning through live, family-friendly robot demonstrations led by Jeongki Lim, Dean of Parsons School of Design at The New School. Families will have the opportunity to meet a robot while discovering how AI learns, responds, and interacts.
Demonstrations will take place in Classroom One:
- 11:30–11:50 AM
- 12:30–12:50 PM
- 1:30–1:50 PM
For Girl Scouts:
Family Day activities can help Girl Scouts complete steps and requirements toward:
- Coding Basics (Badge 1) for Brownies and Juniors
- Scribe Badge for Juniors
- Art and Design Badge for Brownies
Badges are not provided. Scouts should check in at the special Girl Scout station and are encouraged to wear Girl Scout gear, though it is not required.
Family Day is free for everyone and includes all activities, robot demonstrations, and access to the Museum’s digital and fine art galleries on Floors 2 and 3. Admission to the immersive Mezmereyz Galleries is sold separately.
Family Day! Algorithms + Assemblage is made possible through the generous support of the Kansas Masonic Foundation.
