Rae Stern walking past Exuberant Confusion

MANHATTAN, Kan. (WIBW) – The Museum of Art + Light announced Afterimage, a solo exhibition by Israeli American artist Rae Stern, is opening July 26 in the Byrnice + Gordon Hurt Gallery.

According to a press release from the museum, the exhibition brings together a multidisciplinary selection of Stern’s recent works that investigate the layered connections between landscape, memory, and belonging.

Rae Stern, based in New York City, is known for blending new media technologies with traditional craft. Stern employs digital tools to manipulate a range of tactile materials, including ceramics, glass, paper, photography, and textiles.

The exhibition was sparked by Stern’s invitation to work with the archives of the Harry S. Truman Presidential Library, where she encountered Charles F. Knox, an American official stationed in Israel during its formative years. Inspired by this discovery, Stern traveled to Israel to revisit the landscapes referenced in Knox’s records.

The term afterimage, a residual visual impression left after the source has disappeared, serves as a guiding metaphor.

Stern’s work has been shown in institutions across the United States and internationally, including the Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art, Des Moines Art Center, Grand Rapids Art Museum, Medalta Museum, and Eretz Israel Museum.

She has participated in artist residencies at Penland School of Craft, Greenwich House Pottery, Anderson Ranch, Belger Crane Yard Studios, and Englewood Arts.

Afterimage opens in conjunction with the Neo-Techne: Art in the Age of the Machine in the De Coded Gallery.

Afterimage will be on view through October 20, 2025.
